Data continues to reinforce the value of a consulting forester

The value of having a forest management plan in place for your property can be measured in many ways, but research data continues to show that timber sales involving a consulting forester bring higher value to the landowner.

Data from a 2015 study by Greg Conner of WoodsRun Consulting Forestry and Forest2Market’s Joe Clark on the value of a consulting forester confirmed that conclusion. Clark recently added newer full-year data to see if the 2015 findings held true in 2016 and 2017.

Analysis of the 2016-2017 data confirmed this trend for subsequent years, reflecting timber sales involving a consulting forester for per-unit and lump sum sales continue to bring higher value to the landowner.

According to Clark’s post on forest2market.com, “On per-unit sales (sealed bids in particular), sales that involved consultants exceeded the non-consultant sale prices by no less than 11-percent. The data also showed that consultants did equally well on lump sum sales, bringing an average increase of 12-percent on total bids. Not only did the trend hold over time, but it also held over various tract sizes, with consultant sales bringing higher total bids on all four separate acreage categories.”

The added value of a consulting forester not mentioned in Clark’s timber sales data includes things like timber sale boundary line marking, timber sale oversight, timber tax basis advice, and reforestation assistance to name a few.
